Just Desserts

It's a little late here, the beginning of the weekend, and my youngest daughter and I just came back from a very satisfying Japanese dinner. I've wanted to post more, do more, and write more this new year, but as January came around, I caught a terrible flu. There was nothing --- nothing --- that I could do except stay in bed and feel awful.

Marvelous Matcha Coconut Cheesecake {RAW VEGAN RECIPE}

The other day as I was shopping for groceries, I found some mattcha tea powder in the tea section. Some grocery stores and Asian supermarkets carry this magical green tea powder, and I'm addicted to the stuff. I had run out of my stash at home, making due with some green tea bags instead. That wasn't quite working. As a true tea lover, I feel that mattcha is a special ingredient. Traditionally, mattcha is used in Japanese tea ceremony, frothed up with a bamboo brush in an artful practice, showing reverence for tea.

Butterscotch Budino: An Affair to Remember

The spoon dipped through the sticky layer of caramel to reveal the satiny heft of pale custard. One taste, her eyes rolled upwards, and she flung the spoon over her shoulder, clattering upon the tile floor behind her. She moaned a few "ums" audibly in the throes of bliss, head back in abandon, cheeks flush as if in mid-orgasm. Bemused by my friend's sudden custard-induced bliss, my own spoon went into the bowl for a taste.

Chinese New Year at WP24 {Los Angeles Dining}

There are many new names in cuisine and plenty of hot spots to choose from in Los Angeles, yet there’s only one Wolfgang Puck, and he knows how to throw a Chinese New Year feast. Actually, it was more of a night market than a feast, with four food stations serving dim sum, Peking duckling, crispy roast pork, and Szechuan hot pot skewers

Luscious Lemon Cheesecake {raw vegan recipe}

One of my favorite desserts is lemon cheesecake with an irresistibly luscious tangy lemon flavor. I'm not saying that because I want to tempt you with this raw vegan recipe, because even the best cheesecakes cannot compare to the fresh taste of this lemon cheesecake, so convincing is not necessary. Nothing but good stuff is involved here, though you'll think you're being naughty.

Cherries

The bounty of summertime inspires me to make something sweet out of juicy cherries. Of course, there's always a good cherry pie to be made. But just as simple, clafoutis, a rustic French baked fruit recipe, is delightful when you've got bowlfuls of cherries plus guests and/or family to please after a weekend dinner. Cherry Clafoutis. It sounds fancy, but do not be in the least bit concerned if you can't make a dessert. This is so easy.

Chai Impérial Pears

This is one of the most elegant desserts to make. It may take an afternoon or a day to poach these pears properly, but the rest of it is absolutely simple. I wanted to feature the beauty of tea in a dessert, so pears gently poached and steeped in chai tea was the perfect recipe. Palais des Thés Chai Impérial is a delicate black tea blend paired with an aromatic melange of green cardamom, pink peppercorns, cinnamon, ginger and orange zest.

La Primavera Frangipane Tarte

In celebration of spring, I've been creating recipes using edible flowers and experimenting with desserts. This tart was inspired by a raw vegan dessert cookbook and the beauty of all the flowers in my garden. The orange tree in my garden bloomed a few weeks ago in a magnificent perfume of orange blossoms. It seemed so sudden, but the fragrance! I'd open the sliding door wide to the backyard and the beautiful smell filled the house.

Plums in July

I'm creating a garden in my backyard. This is a dream come true for me. I took a day off to accomplish a list of things, but instead of recipe creating and taking photos, I'm drinking iced tea with lemon and mint, while instructing the gardener and crew around the yard, showing them where I'd like to plant the large pots of jasmine, bougainvillea and creeping fig.
