I Have a Krush on Kreation Kafe: Healthy Eats in Santa Monica
Kreation Kafe is a gem of a restaurant. Located on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica, they offer organic, locally grown farmers’ market produce, whole grains, and quality meats like free-range chicken and Niman Ranch beef. They do not use frozen foods and never use the microwave for any of their dishes. The other charming thing is that the cuisine has a Mediterranean flair. They are a Certified Green Business. Outdoor sidewalk dining or inside their natural greenhouse style interior (covered patio) is relaxed, beachy, Santa Monica style casual dining. They have a large communal table inside as well as individual table seating.
I also just heard that they will be opening a “Kreation Juicery” soon. No wonder I noticed the ever-present, hard working manager, Frank, walking through the restaurant today, carrying a heavy juicer. Gil is also the ever-present, hard working waiter at Kreation Kafe. They have come to recognize my face, I think, with my frequent Kreation dining obsession. I should get to know the kitchen staff, because I must have some of the recipes.
When I first discovered Kreation Kafe, it was after a spinning class. I had just spent an hour intensely riding a spin bike, and my body was shaking from exertion. I needed good nourishment. I had the Huevos Cancun: Three Organic Eggs Scrambled with Cilantro, topped with Roasted Corn and Black Bean Salsa, and Fresh Avocado. The eggs come from the local Santa Monica Farmers’ Market. They serve most dishes with a side of lavash, and if not, you can ask for some. I also enjoyed a freshly squeezed lemonade, and water. My shaking subsided, and I fell in love with Kreation Kafe. I craved their cuisine.
The craving for Kreation Kafe was soon a healthy dining habit. I began bringing my family after my first time visit, and also looked forward to eating there after my exercise classes. And I tend to be a creature of habit once I fall in love. I kept ordering the Huevos Cancun.
One day, I branched out. I tried the Shiraz Fritatta: Three Organic Eggs Scrambled with Caramelized Onions and Tomato, baked to perfection with a hint of Turmeric & Basil. (I also added avocado). It arrived to my table with its golden-colored turmeric saturated, buttery, eggy deliciousness. I was overwhelmed with how perfectly turmeric married with the egg and tomato flavors. Turmeric, a magical substance. I marveled at the layered bouquet of sweet and savory flavors mingling with the buttery yet light texture. Heaven. One of the most delicious omelettes I’ve tasted. It definitely has Mediterranean umami.
It took awhile to convince my carnivorous husband that Kreation Kafe served quality meat. He was under the impression that it was another one of my favorite vegetarian restaurants, where I am usually inclined to go. Not so. They offer the best quality meats available. And for vegans and vegetarians, Kreation Kafe will substitute eggs for egg whites or tofu. For occasional ‘pescetarians’ (like me) they also make a lox platter and broiled Scottish salmon. Vegan-friendly, Vegetarian-friendly, Veggie, Meat and Fish eaters alike can enjoy a meal together in delicious harmony.
The few times we brought our three children along for breakfast, a family feast ensued. My youngest daughter, a finicky three-year-old, gobbled up her buttermilk pancakes with real organic Vermont maple syrup that arrives in a shot glass. I snuck a taste of her pancakes.
This was the first time I tried to squeeze information out of the waiter and kitchen staff about the ingredients for their pancakes. Unbelievably fluffy and homemade tasting. They were, I admit, better than my own homemade pancakes. Yet, I could not get the recipe. I am still left guessing in my own kitchen, trying to discover the secret recipe for Kreation Kafe pancakes. They make them in several ways:
- Fresh Blueberry Pancakes, sliced Banana, California Pistachios drizzled with Monavie Açai Blend
- Oatmeal Almond Pancakes served with Organic Butter and drizzled with Pure Organic Vermont Maple Syrup
- Buttermilk with Organic Butter and Pure Organic Vermont Maple Syrup
Lunch is also abundant with healthy Mediterranean options:
- Persian Garden Cucumber Salad with Fresh Tomato, Red Onion, Parsley, and lightly dressed with House Vinaigrette
- Homemade Hummus made from scratch and garnished with Organic California Walnut Oil, and Fresh Parsley
- Eggplant Dip Flavored with Tomatoes, Red Onion and a touch of Garlic
- Bruschetta Roma Tomato, Basil, crushed Garlic, touch of balsamic
- Roasted Corn and Black Bean Salsa
- Fresh Tomato, Onion, Cilantro, dressed with Lemon Juice and Olive Oil
- Yogurt Dip Persian Garden Cucumber with diced Shallots, Fresh Mint, Dill and Parsley
- Tabouleh Salad: Cracked Bulgur, Fresh Tomato, heavily herbed with Fresh Parsley, Mint, Cilantro, and Basil, a touch of OJ, dressed with our House Vinaigrette
The Cold Tapas Sampler has become another favorite of mine. Served with lavash, this is a wonderfully satisfying meal for anytime of day. The ‘baba ganoush’ or eggplant dip, is smoky and earthy. I love the taste with the yogurt dip ‘labneh’ and cucumbers on my lavash.
Sandwiches are served inside a Baguette with House Dressing, Roasted Tomato, Fresh Basil, Spinach, and Red Onions.
Sandwiches include: Vegan Broiled Mushroom, Natural Free-Range Chicken Breast Kabob, Niman Ranch Ground Beef Kabob, Beef Tenderloin Kabob, Broiled Scottish Salmon, Braised Beef Short Rib, Classic Niman Ranch Meatloaf Glazed with Roasted Tomato Relish.
My son’s favorite dish, as well as my husband’s, is the Lox Plate Served with Bruschetta Tomato and chopped Red Onion, Persian Garden Cucumber Salad, Capers, Cream Cheese, and toasted Baguette.
There are many dishes that will entice and each dining experience has equally proven itself as delicious as the last ones I enjoyed. I never tire of Kreation Kafe. In fact, I want to create an annex of Kreation onto my own kitchen. I want to have that recipe for the Buttermilk pancakes once and for all.
The owner, Marjan Sarshar, has kreated a fine Middle Eastern/Mediterranean café. Kreation Kafe’s mission: to offer local farmer’s market products, healthy, delicious and colorful dishes, freshly made tapas, salads, soups, sandwiches, Kabobs, and desserts. Kreation Kafe is available for catering. They also have artwork on a rotating exhibition decorating their cafe walls. Their delectable meals, organic and locally grown, are superb.
Since my food photography is tinged a bit blue (due to the covered patio's blue tarp) I invite you to view Kreation Kafe's website and their Photo Gallery. Also, please take a look at their breakfast/lunch/dinner menus viewable on their website: KREATION KAFE WEBSITE
